This tree is the most valuable of the natural African
antimicrobials, and the bark and leaves have been used to treat yeast,
fungal, bacterial and protozoal infections for centuries.
Indications
Candidiasis syndrome , oral and oesophageal thrush
Natural antimicrobial, particularly for chest infections
Bronchitis
Adjunct to allopathic antibiotic treatment
Apthous ulcers
Dose
Take one tablet eight hourly with food for ten days. For more severe infections
take two tablets eight hourly with food for five to ten days. For oral
and oesophageal thrush, chew one tablet with a little water eight hourly.
Contraindicated in pregnancy and while breastfeeding
Chemistry and Pharmacology
The leaves and bark contain numerous drimane sesquiterpenoids, including
warburganal and polygodial. Both these compounds have been shown to be
potently anti-candidal, and also have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
